My influences are home and travel, figurative expressionism, and variety in contemporary art. I have drawn since I was two, most evenings in bed as a hobby. I started painting in 2005 in the same way, from imagination, starting from abstract marks becoming figurative. One of my favourite musicians described song-writing as like fishing, listening as he plays for anything that sounds good to use for a song. It's a good explanation for my art and music. Art helps me collect thoughts, meditate, and enjoy making colours and shapes into a scenario. I think my works closest to contemporary figurative expressionism and outsider art. Although I don't like nostalgia, romantic sterotype that goes with both, too much being made between genres that are all 99% the same as any other.
I have been making abstract art digitally, hoping it will help towards abstract painting, which I have tried unsuccessfully, but hope to make in 2012. I would like to make large black and white film projections, after seeing an installation by Verdensteatret at the Shanghai Biennale 2010 using this and what looked like abstract metal sculptures.
I like that anyone can create something new, at any moment. That all art can be worthless to anyone. That it can communicate in a vague or explicit way with as many or few people as the artist likes. That attempts to put objective values on art are never widely accepted. That people can't explain or may not even know why they like art. I think it's good and fitting that it's the last big business left so unregulated. I think art is a release from the effects modern life, a way for the desperate to communicate, or feel they can. Something we share and can enjoy without explanation or understanding.
