Sonic Youth are from New York and began in 1981, after the origianl members came together from various bands part of the late 70's New York punk scene. Sonic Youth are one of the most experimental bands of their genre, often using alternate guitar tunings and avoiding the solid guitar power-chord and song-stucturing normally associated with punk. Sonic Youth are sometimes referred to as art-rock, and are now a well-known and prolific alternative rock band.
