Below the review are YouTube videos of all NYC Ghosts & Flowers songs (performed live where possible) by Sonic Youth at various concerts.
They sound like a band that just had all their equipment stolen, and didn't want to go all intense into another album like their last. It's a light record, especially coming straight after the depth of A Thousand Leaves. Unlike A Thousand Leaves, you don't have to absorb every note, exactly the kind of album I needed and was hoping Sonic Youth would release. NYC Ghosts & Flowers is as close to easy listening as Sonic Youth get. Easier Listening. Beautiful instrumental opening lightly sung by Thurston. It's atmosphere as Bad Moon Rising era, but different. This changes though, as another two-halfed song takes a relatively simple tune and makes Renegade Princess.
These songs sound written in a very short space of time. It is also a very short album. Sonic Youth's music is so dependent on customised instruments and tunings, it meant Sonic Youth had lost not only their equipment when it was stolen but many of their songs, and much of their signature sound.
Nevermind (What Was It Anyway) not only great music and perfect accompanying vocals, but it's now the production, like on A Thousand Leaves, sounds perfect.
Small Flowers Crack Cocaine, not the only song more poetry than lyrics. I like the vocals sound, not to comment on the poetry.
Side2side and StreamXSonik Subway both show you can strip Sonic Youth songs down to skeleton. Easier listening plays out the last two songs, although the instruments take-off in NYC Ghosts & Flowers more than at any other point in the album.
