Hand it Over by Dinosuar Jr

Below the review are YouTube videos of all Hand it Over songs (live versions where possible) by Dinosaur Jr at various concerts.
The recording gets tired and lacks invention of earlier albums. Some brilliant parts, but my least favourite Dinosaur Jr record. Hand it Over is good, but excitement of being in the studio, and of being in a band isn't there. Alone is fantastic, echoed throught the album, like in I Don't Think. Typically beautiful parts with Never Bought It, Nothins Goin On and Gettin Rough, but playing this album from start to finish, it drifts. The production wakes up for some solos but it's sporadic. The strings at the end of Can't We Move This are too much, and sum up what I don't like about it. Straight punk, no string section would have been better. The vocals don't feature like in earlier albums, to the point where its like they're trying to be hidden. J Mascis is one of my favourite singers, but this album doesn't seem to want to use his voice half the time. At its worst parts, Hand It Over sounds sludgy and comfortable. I'm Insane is beautiful, and hearing live versions of these songs, the songs are better than the album.
