Below the review are YouTube videos of all Goo songs (performed live where possible) by Sonic Youth at various concerts.
Something's missing, the live recordings prove the songs are great, but the album doesn't survive top studio production as well as Dirty. Dirty sounds better for its production, but Goo would have been better recorded like Sister. It becomes less true as the album gets going from Mary-Christ onwards, and by the amazing instrumental in My Friend Goo. Sonic Youth of old sound. But then Disappearer and Mildred Pierce sound like the suits from Geffen recorded it. The crashing out of Mildred Pierce is done to virtually no effect, and sounds like one of those hundreds of bands that try to imitate Sonic Youth, but don't realise it takes more than bashing your strings in front of an amp to make good music. Maybe because Mildred Pierce is one of Sonic Youth's first songs, and could have been written before they got better.
Cinderella's Big Score is inventive and brilliant instrumental, but also for Kim's vocals. The songs Kim sings can be picked out as the generally the best on the album. An exception, maybe the best vocals on the album shared between Thurston and Kim onTitanium Exposé.
The chaos on Goo rarely feels like chaos, the straight rock doesn't always feel as powerful as it usually does, and the soft parts don't often have the usual Sonic Youth passion. Goo was a 150 thousand dollar album, which appears to done more harm than good.
Quick trivia: J Mascis from Dinosaur Jr is singing very low in the mix of Tunic.
