Below the review are YouTube videos of all Dirty songs (performed live where possible) by Sonic Youth at various concerts.
Drumming amazing from start to finish. To get anything out of Dirty though, I have to cure the eq push the two left hand stick-things right up, the two right ones right down, volume on 11, and the band are in my bedroom. Either that or watch the live versions on YouTube.
Due to restrictions with my living conditions, I don't get that luxury very often, so Dirty goes largely unlistened to. A ton of depth in this album, and the alternate version of Wish Fulfillment (in the YouTube videos below) is one of my favourite Sonic Youth recordings, that prove the song-writing beneath the feedback. A few less dimensions than most Sonic Youth albums, but I'm sure this is just the production. The impression that once you've played it though a few times, there's not much more to discover. Contrast with albums like Sister and Bad Moon Rising, I keep finding things years later. Big studio albums always sound better in the car stereo for some reason. Maybe it's the crappy speakers.
The only bad song, the cover of The Untouchables Nic Fit. It's just not as good as the original, and doesn't do anything for Dirty either. Given they had to trim down Dirty from 19 songs, it's hard to imagine how Nic Fit survived.
I won't totally knock the production though. On the Strip is gorgeous, Youth Against Fascism, Swimsuit Issue. The instrumentals on Dirty are brilliantly written and put together. JC, particularly the intro as the drums come in. I could keep picking out examples of great music on Dirty.
All those bands that came out the early 90's US alternative punk scene have a 'Dirty'. Their ground-breaking major album, often by Geffen.
Popular and unpopular for the same reasons. It's important they were made, just to show how good these bands were in a way everyone can see. These bands weren't just kids that had a punk ethic, and got famous because there was trend for it. You can't record an album like Dirty without being a really, really good band. So I won't knock Dirty, despite finding the production cold.
