Confusion is Sex by Sonic Youth

It sounds like Sonic Youth's twelth or thirteenth studio album, not their first. From before the end of the first song, this is only going to be a great album. Maybe it's because Confusion is Sex was a low budget 8 track release, or ignores the 'Rules for Successful Song-writing' that is sounds so near perfect, but wouldn't do justice to it. It's abandon, despite the openess of the writing, lack of clear structure, the album is packed. You never get this with such openly recorded albums. There's no dirge. It sounds like anything but, but in many ways is a minimalist album. A rough perfectionists album, a minimalist album with a lot going on. The sounds and levels of everything is perfect. Sonic Youth had in mind to record a single, but were getting so many songs written, they ended up almost by accident with an album. All the songs on Confusion is Sex sound like they were written in pretty much the same frame of mind, and I imagine within a short space of time, so the story of how it came about would appear. I would believe Confusion is Sex was recorded in one take. Protect Me You (the only Sonic Youth song with Lee on bass) like toned down Velvet Underground - I'll Be Your Mirror. I imagine the Velvet Underground was a major, major influence, although Sonic Youth have taken it further from dreamy pop,into experimental SY world. An angry protest album? I Wanna Be Your Dog is live from a 1982 tour with The Swans.
Sometimes, on this album, the only thing even resembling a melody is the vocal. Lee is Free was inteded as the last song, and was until the 1995 re-issue added songs from Kill Yr Idols EP. Excellent guitar home recording by Lee, on to two cassettes and left as it was for the album. The album cover is a sketch by Kim of Thurston. Enjoy the videos below.
