Below the review are YouTube videos of all A Thousand Leaves songs (performed live where possible) by Sonic Youth at various concerts.
It's day-dream hypnotic Sonic Youth, brilliant vocals on every song. Excellent production, succeeds where Goo failed in keeping high spec production fresh and real.
The crescendo the first song, Contre le sexisme builds up to, is a beautiful subdued rhythm. Contre le sexisme like the drums in JC on Dirty, but softer and less solid ambience. The same as the last song Heather Angel, but Heather Angel is more aggressive.
After Contre le sexisme, the shortest song is close to five minutes. Not typical for Sonic Youth, and I wonder if it's anything to do with this being their first album in the comfort of a home-studio. Consistently long songs, aren't made up as much by prolonged ambient instrumental noises. They just seem to repeat variants of verses and chorus's more than usual, or at least the instrumentals have more solid rhythum behind them. I expect most songs on A Thousand Leaves would be half the length, if recorded for earlier albums.
Sunday is a rollercoaster, but most of the time it's like each song just mutates and goes on a journey. Rollercoasters still, but more subtle ones. Depending on your frame of mind, listening to A Thousand Leaves can be heavy on the attention span.
The first of Sonic Youth's more settled albums. No White Kross, Death Valley '69 or Drunken Butterfly (off Sister, Bad Moon Rising and Dirty). A refusal to let songs be predictable is still there, but not with full abandon. The ugly agression often sung by Kim like Female Mechanic Now on Duty and The Ineffable Me. A Thousand Leaves is a classic. Enjoy the videos below.
