July 31 2011| King, bird and Skyscraper, and Icarus - Cutouts with acrylic paint. Photographed and Photoshop Cutout effect 4,4,2. High resolution versions saved in book folder with the others. From going round the Miro show with Deme yesterday, we both really liked his works on paper. Said I would email him some of mine when done. His website should be done soon. Marcia had some excellent work on paper on show at Nolias. Will check out again next time we're down there. Nolia on her way to ours now. Would like to rotate some of my works currently in Nolias shop. Was speaking about it to Deme yesterday. The two blue paintings she has on display aren't really finished, and could be swapped with better ones I have here.
The comb effect is harder than was expecting. If scissor off some teeth and the big bits at the end, and work slow, lining them up so it looks like squares, could be good as a background. One of the test sheets could be worked in to a drawing of a rabbit. Maybe a piece of work to take to Nolias.
Turn out good for digital art anyway. To mix with digital version of Indoor Storm. But need more models like Monkey Mikado. Shelley was speaking of making in to film.
11pm | Repainted bird flying over volcano painting. Similar to Drunks.
afternoon| Got a lot of Joe's site done and linked it up to its domain name. When Joe was here I showed him the Max Beckamnn painting I copied a few of my paintings faces from recently. He was saying he's been looking at a lot of George Grosz. Seems were both being influenced from these painters recently. Tidied up the ICR and Shadow group sites, and I think for the sixth time, re-done the Drunks painting. Might work on it more later, but for now it seems full and finished. Could be refined more when dry. Gridismjr blurb written and added to it's page. Seems there's no point doing submitting articles out now. The sites aren't really ranked well anymore. Better to keep all the material on my site any way. Shelley doing her Robin commission, but sidetracked ordering more ebay stuff from China, and playing the battle game on iphone. Next to re-work the fire forest painting from a few weeks ago, but knackered after doing Drunks last night and today. Gridismjr possible. Speaking to Shelley in the garden about making a huge Gridismjr . Maybe a poster can do at night in Photoshop, or a painting if could be projected like Lictenstein. Just think of all the better work that could be done with that time.
July 26th| 6 images so far, changed name to Gridismjr. Joe coming today to do website.
July 21| Did first drawing, and digitally coloured it. First in a series called Gridism.
July 20th| Did owls drawing on top of old scribble. May work up for big drawing. Joe coming round next week to do website. Shelley doing loads of little dog drawings for Noilas Gallery. Going there to work for the day tomorrow. Owl drawing, the 2 thick black lines. One thicker than the other, litlle ones off it like branches - put into geometric absract red black, white. Would need something like the owl scribble to break it up though. could use scribble to work from, but that could mess up from the start. The primary colour posters done yesterday, but would need to be painted to look their best. Ok for now though.
July 19 2011 | Heard parakeets around half nine last night, but no sign of them during the day. To take to Nolias Gallery: 1in x A4 long edge strip reading 'Origianl one-off Hand drawn blank Greeting cards £4.99 . (Hand-drawn written Matisse style). Black pins from Tesco. Printed prices to be stuck on to black card. Blu Tac. Square cornered sticky labels - 2cm rectangle. Print from Stuck Near Tate Modern P25 with our names, saying 'More information in the book Stuk Near Tate Modern' . Covering shop Friday so Nolia can go to Scotland. She won't be around in the morning, so get key off Abdul, and leave with porter if leaving after Abdul closes to go to Justin's Private View. The L-shaped gap between my 10x8's and the 24x30: move the 10x8's so no gap. Nolia wants the wall like wall paper, but need work around having the price labels on the wall as well. Gunther has a show on in Nolias Gallery 3 across the road. Small space but nice with the pipes showing across the ceiling and the silver chains holding the paintings. Someone from Christies or Southeby's came and advised changing them though. All Shelley's cards now on Nolias wall. Want to get started on giant drawing. Something striped after seeing Zebra in Romantics show at Tate Britian with Jonathan and his niece and her friend. Also paper cut outs, maybe if abstract will be good for cards at Nolias, but all that is too light. Tried digital software on Shelley's cards to make cartoons for, but wasn't really working. Paper cut outs may make good cards, or colour block prints.
Angels of Royals paper cut out works as as poster for card. Auto levels - Solid up the colour, then use cut out effect - filter- artistic settings 4-4-2. Saved a high res for poster. Did the same for Plith and Bird Science.
7pm | Saw Ben Wilson has done about 100 chewing gums all together outside Barclays on the Broadway. Photoed them and put on site. A bit of local history.

July 9 2011|
10pm| Not many parakeets today. Only a couple, so guess the flock has moved on.
9am|Eventually finished plywood painting 1 yesterday. Decided not to varnish. Photography not affected by reflecting light in the carved areas, aothough note: underexpose when photographing white. A whole stop. Had to re-shoot as light meter reading was ok, but white results blown out on pc after. Mum told us about East Finchley art venue on corner of Bishops Avenue by the white lion. Will check it out maybe next week, if Shelley is up to it. Sleeping in a lot recently, but still may be tired after birthday. Back not to bad it seems. could do with a place to run off some block prints. Still need to do 2 Picasso's for Alexis, and try out her paper. Paintings to be wrapped and stored, as recent crop all dry. Need to get some decent acrylic. Shelley's new purple site looks good. was talking last night about revising much of her work. Butterfly Bed aka After WEdding overshadowing a lot of old stuff, which is a good thign. Bill to Shelley yesterday, said new book of poetry may be coming out. Shelley put us down for a copy.
Nothing much was happening with plywood 1 till white background put on. Black blotches showing through the back must have been at least the fourth layer of colour. Another failed attempt at an abstract painting, but atleast there is something remaining from it in the background. It almost looks as if was painted over a scrap piece of wood. There isn't much showing the damage as intentional, although it is a better picture for it. Preparing it for hanging would be next if wanted to sell it. Attaching a frame, so back to timer yard. Plywood 2 - maybe attach frame before painting to prevent damage to picture. Would make sense to attempt abstract again, as it seems each failed attempt only helps the figurative outcome. The same way as plywood one. Double primed, carved whichever way the grain allows, varnished carefully to leave non carved areas for paint. Although I didn't notice any problem with the paint attaching to varnised areas. Research acrylic painting over varnish. If attaching problems, may need overall varnish coat to hold it all together.
Didn't get work done for Nolias, so little point going there despite the jewellery show. Would like another look at the Vorticist show though, today 10pm opening. Need to rotate work in Nolias. Maybe during the week.
July 7th 2011
11pm|Still not nearly finished plywood painting. Second board single primed. Shelley birthday open air play. Title: At he rowing club. Work needed for Nolias. Possibly going down there Sat. Aniamls / bandw prints?. - Finished Rowing Club a third time, finally realised it was the main face that was the problem. The carving worked out, but don't know how it will photograph. Probably catch the light.
Thinking of what to write for remod manifesto: Painting is different, although I don't know how to say, to other things I do in my spare time. I think the only way to understand it, is in doing it. I'm comfortable in the ICR, as they are artists I respect, and have a similar approach to their work as I do mine. When the ICR travelled to Germany and visited the Von Stockhausens at their castle, it was interesting hearing discussions at the dinner table that sometimes went long in to the night, relating art to mythology, philosphy, psychology, religion, science, spirituality and back through ancient history. I find putting art into words confusing, and often convoluted to being irrelevant. But in ICR, I think is a group of artists focused on their work, and in Anything I have to say about art, is in my art, and I'm not able to explain it. What I hope contributes something to ICR, is my paintings.
July 6th 2011
midnight| Onion birthday. tidied up painting stuff. Plywood painting unfinished. Must have done over 12 hours today on it. Forget about for now.
12noon| Chris sent 3 wise men dvd. Need to send him Really elelmentarty. Shelley working on REd tent painting, trying clues for her birthday present tomorrow. Indoor Storm has bowed so threw away all leftover painted cardboard. Base plywood double primed, and weather ok for jigsaw cutting. Just need jigsaw cutter. Sonic Youth Nurse arrived. --Appears we were wrong about jigsaw cutter. New plan to carve in to ply like Mike, but in primed one. Started ok, working out the grain, and what it limits to. Went figurative again, the carving only a background effect now under the colour of paint. Not finished, will need a lot of work, then varnish. Had to varnish the cuts already to prepare for acrylic over the top.
Will have to rethink abstract as everytime it fails. More carful, like Shelley said. Shadow I think will make it look finished. The flat colour abstract hasn't worked so far. Not pure abstract anyway. Need brushes.
1am | first coat of primer on base ply. Looks like a few of us in ICR are planning to contribute something to the Remod manifesto. Base ply shut in batroom cos of smell. 2nd coat could go on 2.15am but no need, as other ply needs cutting, primiing, and painting first anyway. could get most of in underway tomorrow. Need more cardboard and gesso primer. The good thing about these cut outs is breaking the image up first, with most of it done before you need to get to the proper painting. The abstract can all be done on instinct and changed, then what you're left with is almost there. Indoor Storm was finished as an abstract before even started as a figurative painting. Could say it was a painti over.
Decided maybe if planned it ahead, may could get the feeling of completion from an abstract. Looked through the Vorticist book, and they look finished to me. don't know what it is with mine. this problem of turning it figurative. Just work the shapes, tones keeping them as shapes. It shouldn't be a problem holding off changing it. Shelley says its cos of the blending, and should do more defined areas.
tomorrow Shelley's birthday.
5th July 2011
10pm|Have 2 sheets 6.5mm plywood. I to cut up, 1 for base. Need to pirme base, and others after they are cut. £18 from timber merchant, I thought a bit expensive. Cardboard test went well - Indoor Storm, subsequently changed plan. Will do new image for wooden one. Cut shapes any old how, and see what can be made of it. Need to check have jigsaw cutter. If it's dry tomorrow can get started. Decent acrylics. Might stick only to blues and greens. Reds all had to be painted out in Indoor Storm . The black looked better.
Joe wrote he is working a lot these days till early hours. Good to hear,. Emailed back saying Shelley and I finding the same. We all working a lot recently and finding each piece getting more involved. Although not always.
Atlantis order - Shelley's 60 x 48in . Plus 1 for me? - over £100 free delivery
7pm| Tried abstract again, but same problem. painting this time but not finished till figurative. Tried to only consider colour and arrangement, but didn't work. Ended up being Indoor Storm on cardboard with acrylic. Obvious Picasso, but still going back to the poster colours, and Jessica Dismorr. Had to get rid of red. Didn't seem right when mixing, but thought if put blue green and black in it would be ok. Collaged, as started off an expereiment to see what it would be like carving up plywood. Not sure if cardbord will last. Ask Charles next time I see him. His old one of Bill seems ok, but may have primed or treated it first.
Parakeets arrived a few days ago. Getting more and louder. Still haven't been seen in our garden yet apart from one. Got loads of photos.
Joe posted his photos for his website. Jesse now in ICR.
3rd July 2011
11pm | Vorticists show yesterday at Tate Britain. Factory drawing couldn't stay abstract. Don't know why I did a drawing as the main things from yesterday were colours of Jessica Dismorr and 3 small Christopher Nevinson. I think 2 were b&w. Factory drawing finished ok, but was intending to be more different from my usual style. Started off poster design. then abstract. then usual like Bald Man in a Bedroom, which turned out to be Restrictor. Had in mind to keep it abstract, but just didn't seem finished till figurative. Works as digital poster, used 1942 font.
22nd June 2011
2pm| Heavy rain. Yesterday's painting didn't look much this morning. Reworked it. Bright Light is now Old Hotel Scene. Also finished Birds in Indoor Flowers.
11pm| Can't keep track of days. Thought Robins gig was tomorrow till phone buzzed saying on stage in 5 mins, in Dalston. Did a few 10in x 8in's instead. All paint overs:
Man seducing.
Winter window,
Fantasising
21st June 2011
1.30pm|Carrying on reworking old paintings. Must have done 15 or so the last week. Charles + Mark seem weary, but bad paintings are bad paintings. Not even sentimental value. Shelley's painting her woman hanging off a bed. Her fourth day on this painting, but she's only being doing about an hour or 2 a day recently. She's over-working the patterns so they merge like into abstract. Looks like it's going to be good. Since I found Max Beckmanns Self Portrait on a Yellow Background with a Cigarette, been trying to do similar face shading. Today's the longest day, and wasted half of it already updating website.
5.30pm|Painted over Tree House. Now called Bright Light. Reminds me of the piercing uncovered lights in Shelley's parents house. Copied the moon/light from Lovesick by George Grosz. Started reworking Flowers Infront of a Mirror, but Nolia's coming round soon, so can't finish it yet. Need a break anyway. Going to IKEA to get some furniture for the gallery - tables and chairs for coffee.
20th June 2011
10pmPaintings 10 days old seem like old paintings. Must be from painting loads each day. 5 hours a day recently. When had a job, paintings 2 months old would still seem like new work. Did 3 today, all 18 x 14in. More than I thought, as we didn't get out of bed till 2. Had to run for a few miutes yesterday to get to a cash point, must have knocked me out. Photo'd them all, as just finished the last one around 8.30pm. Any later, and wouldn't have been enough light:
Man with Udders, Creatures on a beach, Two men and Birds - All paint overs. |
