Joe Machine is an English writer, painter and naturalist, known for his uncompromising depictions of the human condition and adherence to the principles of psychodynamics within his work.
His paintings are highly authentic and instantly recognisable dealing with concepts of vulnerability, sexuality, violence and fear drawn from his experiences and personal life. His unflinching attitude towards his subject matter has marked him out as the foremost exponent of self-confrontational art in the UK.
His work generally falls into two categories; self-confrontational art and Kentish nature works.
His love of nature is embodied by his haunting, beautiful and evocative paintings of the Kent countryside where he spends time walking in the hills and ancient woodlands of his locality.
This is contrasted by his work drawn from his past which is distinguished by the ethic of never painting anything he has not directly experienced which grants his audience a unique perspective on a man whose life has evolved from violence and crime into being one of the most original artists of his era.
Joe Machine is one of the original members of the Stuckists, the first Remodernist art group founded by Charles Thomson and Billy Childish in 1999. His interests in other disciplines, most notably psychology, lead him to establish The Institute for Collective Remodernism in 2008. The Institute is a multi-disciplinary movement whose members come from a diversity of professions and are dedicated to the pursuit of self-knowledge through creativity. The Institute has centres in London and Germany.
Joe machine’s paintings have been acquired by some of the biggest art collectors in Europe. He continues to write and paint and exhibit his work nationally and internationally.
